If you are planning on "tasting a rainbow" why not make it a healthy one that will provide your body with the nutrients it needs? With the wide variety of fruits and vegetables that are available to us today, it is easy to choose your favorites from each color group.  On top of being chock full of the nutrients just from their color group, each fruit and veggie offers their own unique nutrients to help your body be the best it can be. Here is just a sampling of some the healthiest fruits and veggies from each color group.

Red Fruits and Veggies are rich in nutrients such as lycopene, vitamins A, C, and K, just to name a few.  They are helpful in preventing breast cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and lowering cholesterol levels. All while helping our bodies lessen the number of free radicals within it.

Apples
Apples originated in Western Asia and were brought to North America in the 17th century with the first known orchard grown just outside of Boston in 1625. The old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" holds true. Apples are a great source of fiber and vitamin C which helps with the prevention of colon, prostrate, and lung cancer.

Tomatoes
Originating in South America tomatoes were thought to have been grown in North America as early as 1710. Classified as a fruit, tomatoes are widely known in the culinary world as a vegetable. Tomatoes are rich in the antioxidant lycopene which is thought to help prevent cancer and protect the skin from UV rays. 

Orange and Yellow Fruits and Veggies are chock full of beta-carotene, vitamin C, lycopene and potassium. Your body will thank you for helping it reduce its risk of prostate cancer, promote collagen for healthy joints, encourage alkaline levels to be balanced, lower cholesterol and blood pressure just by eating orange or yellow fruits and veggies.

Peaches
Peaches originated in China and were introduced to North America around the 17th century. They are rich in vitamin A and potassium. Eating peaches may help prevent cancers associated with the organs and glands. They are a good source of fiber and have a diuretic affect which helps those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or gout. Your skin will also thank you for eating the fruit that gives you a "peachy" glow!

Carrots
Thought to have originated in Afghanistan before the 900's, carrots were introduced to North America in the 1600's. The accessibility and low cost of carrots made it a popular staple during the two World Wars. They are rich in the antioxidant beta-carotene, as well as, potassium. Carrots are helpful in balancing the high levels of sodium associated with high blood pressure.  They are also benefit the skin, hair, eyes, and nails.

Bananas
Bananas were introduced to North America in the 16th century, but are thought to date back as far as 6th AD in Southeast Asia. Full of potassium, bananas are thought to help in the prevention of leg cramps.  They may also help reduce the risk of colorectal and breast cancers.

Squash
Squash are the oldest known crops dating back as far as an estimated 10,000 years ago in Mexico. They are thought to have arrived in North America around 1893.  Both Presidents Washington and Jefferson grew squash in their gardens.  Rich in vitamins C, potassium, and the  antioxidants alpha and beta carotenes, squash are an important vegetable in healthy living.

Green Fruits and Veggies can boast about their health enhancing capabilities.  They are full of the nutrients chlorophyll, calcium, folate, beta-carotene, fiber, and vitamin C, just to name a few. These green wonders help reduce cancer, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, aid in digestion, fight free-radicals, and boost the immune system. Wow!

Kiwi
Native to Southern China and known as the Chinese gooseberry, the Kiwifruit got it's more marketable name in 1962. Kiwi is one of the best sources for Vitamin C and potassium. It also contains fiber, vitamin A, and antioxidants.  Not to mention it is a beautiful garnish for any salad or dessert!

Broccoli
The evolution of Broccoli began in Europe where it evolved from a cabbage plant some 2,000 years ago. Besides its immune system benefits, broccoli has been found to help reduce the risks of lung, rectal, and stomach cancers. In large amounts it has helped fight aggressive prostate cancer and heart disease. Serving broccoli raw or lightly steamed is the best way to preserve its healthy nutrients!

Blue and Purple fruits and veggies are important sources of lutein, fiber, flavonoids, resveratrol, quercetin, and vitamin C. They are helpful in improving mineral and calcium absorption, reducing inflammation and tumor growth, while supporting healthy digestion and limiting the activity of cancerous cells in the digestive tract.

Grapes
The image of grapes and their cultivation has been recorded in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Grapes remain one of the most important crops all over the world, both for enjoying them in their natural state, juice, or wine. Full of resveratrol, grapes help the body by inhibiting degenerative nerve disease, viral infections, cancer and heart disease.

Eggplant
Native to India, Eggplant is thought to have arrived in the West around the 1500's. Eating eggplant may help reduce your risk of dementia and stroke, from the nasunin it encompasses. Nasunin fights hard against free radicals, along with fighting cancer by restricting new blood vessel growth and helping existing blood vessels to relax.

White Fruits and Veggies contain important nutrients such as beta-glucans and lignans, which help activate the immune system making it stronger. These powerful nutrients set in motion the hard working B and T cells, helping to reduce the risk of breast, prostrate, and colon cancers, while balancing hormone levels and cancers related to hormones.

Brown Pears
Pears love the warmth of the coastal areas and mild temperatures.  During ancient Greek times, they were used to help treat nausea. Pears are excellent natural laxatives full of insoluble fiber. They aid in the prevention of colon polyps, gallbladder disorders, arthritis, and gout.

Onions
The onion can be traced back as far as 5000BC. It is hard to believe that the high levels of vitamin C and fiber come from such a low calorie vegetable. On top of that, onions help fight against osteoporosis and heart disease.
